The evidence

Weight loss and metabolic health

Large randomized trials

Weekly peptide medications that act on appetite and blood sugar hormones (the GLP-1 family) are among the best-studied treatments in medicine. In large trials they produced substantial weight loss, and in adults with heart disease they lowered the risk of major heart events.

  • 14.9% vs 2.4%Average weight lossAfter 68 weeks, in 1,961 adults with overweight or obesity, compared with placebo (STEP 1). [1]
  • 20.9% vs 3.1%Average weight loss, highest doseAfter 72 weeks, in 2,539 adults with obesity or overweight, compared with placebo (SURMOUNT-1). [2]
  • 20% lowerRisk of major heart eventsHeart attack, stroke or cardiovascular death: 6.5% vs 8.0% over about 40 months in 17,604 adults with heart disease and overweight, without diabetes (SELECT). [3]
